It seems like the crazier my day is at work, the more strange the thoughts in my head are on the drive home. It's quite possibly my brain's way of decompressing and distancing from the work woes. I thought I would share just a couple of them to try to gauge just how strange they are. Maybe I'm not so weird after all?
- On Monday, I was stopped at a red light with my window rolled down and a fly flew in and landed on the dash board. The light turned green and the fly stayed on the dash, cleaning itself or whatever it is that they're doing when they're rubbing their legs all over their body. I continued to drive for about a mile, and then stopped at another red light. At that point, the fly flew out the same window it came in through. So I'm thinking - was the fly just hopping a ride to its next destination like one might hop a bus or call a cab? Or did I just completely screw up that fly's whole life by taking him at least a mile from his home where he probably will never find his way back or see his little fly family ever again? And also, why do I assume that it was a male fly?
- I miss Santino's impressions of Tim Gunn. "Where's Andre? Andre, c'mon... we're going to the Red Lobster."
- Today the temperature didn't top 60 degrees here. It was quite chilly and rainy and gray. I was stopped at the fly bus stop intersection and a young guy pulled up next to me in a Honda Accord. He was not wearing a shirt. I found this odd at first. But then the next minute, I thought maybe it wasn't so odd, and I thought, hey! it's his car - he decides the shirt policy. Rock on, young guy. Rock on.
- I sometimes think, "I wonder what Oprah is doing right now?"
- Right before spotting shirtless Accord guy, I noticed Santa Claus driving a gigantic pick-up truck behind me, inching forward at the red light until his bumper must have been quite intimate with mine. Then he proceeded to tailgate me until he turned into a driveway about 4 blocks down the road. Why, Santa? Christmas is still three months away. Slow down. You've got plenty of time.
- Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I never went to the grocery store again. Would we go hungry? Would we eat all the canned goods and stale Wheat Thins in the pantry? Would we just go out to eat? Would John go instead?
- Will there ever be a route from our house to work which does not have massive road construction at some point along the way?
I can't think of any more right now, because I am so very aware that each minute I spend writing this post is a minute I could be spending in my warm bed. But I'm going to consciously try to remember some of my random commuting thoughts so that I can add to this list. What do you guys think about during your commute? And more importantly, am I weird?

Your fly story reminded me of the movie "You've Got Mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. In it, there's a scene when she's on the subway in NYC and a butterfly gets on her train. It's a cute dialogue and she assumes it gets off to go to Bloomie's to buy a hat. (I think that's how it goes.)
Last week, I was less lucky. It seems that a wasp hitched a ride in my car from the gas station and then followed me into the house to live in my upstairs bathroom.
Anyway, not weird.

What happened to Andre? I loved his dead-on impression of Tim Gunn! My love for Tim Gunn is endless! Weird random thoughts are normal, keep sharing them!

We took a "South Dakota fly" (as we named it) on a family vacation to Omaha. It remained in our car for two days and finally exited when we stopped for gas on the way home. I hope he had as much fun as we did!
On my commute I think "man, I'm sick of listening to the CDs in my car, I should change them...in the meantime I'll listen to NPR." A few minutes pass and I think "man, I'm sick of hearing about the Middle East...I'll listen to my CDs"

I read an article or study once that said its a normal reaction on the brain's part to think particularly weird things in stressful situations. (I tend to think morbidly weird things when driving in stressful traffic, and before I read that article it made me worry about myself.)
Not weird!
