After waiting a week for my Wobbly to dry, I couldn't stand it any longer and had to post my photo of her. Yep, she's done, albeit still a little damp. Gotta say I love her fuzzy feltedness. And she's the perfect size for carrying my knitting projects, so she'll definitely be put to good use as soon as she dries completely, which will hopefully be by tomorrow so I can take her to my knitting group.
I would change a few things follow the directions better if I ever make this project again. One, I would backstitch or whip stitch the sides together, instead of not reading the directions and mattress stitching them. The bag looks okay, but the seams are very bulky compared to the backstitching I did on the bottom. Oops.
Second, I'd mix up the colors of the circles instead of doing them the same on both sides. This would alleviate the am-I-going-to-run-out-of-the-orange-before-I'm-done? stress I found myself with on this bag. Here's a pic of how much of the orange I had left. Forty inches worth, which sounds like a lot, but in reality was cutting it pretty close for comfort. Or, I'd use four colors like the patterns says to, instead of only three like I did....
Third, I'd make the handles a little sturdier. Compared to the size of the bag, I'm concerned that the handles are too flimsy as is, and will tear with the weight of a bag full of stuff. This cuts down on the usability of the tote, but will probably be fine for carrying the lace shawl I'm getting ready to cast on.
Specs: Lambs Pride Bulky on size 13 needles. 3 1/2 skeins of main color, various amounts of 3 contrast colors (approx. 1 full skein of the orange, 3/4 skein of the light green, 1/2 skein of the brown). Prefelting dimensions: 30" tall x 25" top/22" base wide. After felting dimensions: 21" tall x 16 1/2" top/14" base wide.
Overall, this was a great intro to intarsia. I'm really glad to now know how this technique is done, and while I'm hesitant to say I'll do much of it, I do like having it in my knitting bag o' tricks.
Wobble on!
